Autotransformers and fixing their various troubles

Auto transformers or the electronic transformers are available in plenty of sizes, shapes and functionality. To fix the issues you encounter with them, you need to first understand their functionality.

Signal transformers, audio transformers and power transformers are there to meet various needs of the industries. The main trouble with autotransformers lies with, open winding, turn to turn shorts and winding to ground shorts. For trouble shooting autotransformer issues, we need a Digital Multimeter, a power transformer and 110 volt jumper cord with insulated alligator clips.
  • First of all take a check on the input and output of the defective autotransformer.Make sure to have a proper view of the input and output terminals, to find any trace of rust or corrosion. In case the wires are rusted, you just need to change the wiring, rather than replacing the transformer.
  • Now look for any bumps or external damages or bashes, and you need instant replacement of the electric transformer. Otherwise it may be too dangerous using a faulty autotransformer that can damage you at its worst.
  • Once the physical verification part of the voltage converter is over, you need to check the functionality. For that you have to switch on the auto transformer circuit and make it live. Be careful to protect yourself from any un-insulated wire of the system. If possible, use a pair of rubber gloves and wear shoes.
  • Take out the Digital Multimeter and set the highest possible resistance, approximately at 2 mega ohms. Connect either the input or output winding of the auto transformer with the Digital Multimeter. The reading should be “infinite”, to indicate that, the electrical transformer is perfectly in condition. If the readings deviate from this, then quickly make arrangements to replace it.
Auto transformers are to prevent electric and high impedance related accidents. They won’t work well, unless we set the right arrangement for them, so it’s essential to keep them maintained at their best.
