A mechanical seal is a device that helps join systems or mechanisms together. It prevents leakage that contains pressure and it excludes contamination. A stationary seal is also known as 'packing’. The seal is effective when the sealants have proper adhesion and the gaskets have proper compression. For example: a plumbing system. A mechanical seal is also known as mechanical face seal or end face mechanical seal.

It is generally used in rotating equipments such as blowers, pumps, mixtures and compressors. When a normal pump rotates the liquid general tents to leak out and it’s difficult to prevent the liquid from coming out. Earlier many methods were used to prevent the leakage but they were not effective enough. Hence the invention of mechanical seal came into practice. It is very useful when joining mechanisms together. End face mechanical seal makes use of rigid and flexible elements. These elements help to maintain a contact at a sealing interface and slide on each other.

This process makes it easier for the rotating element to pass through a sealed case. This helps prevent leakage. The elements are both hydraulically and mechanically loaded with a spring or other device to maintain contact. It should hold four functional components. They are primary sealing surfaces, secondary sealing surfaces, a means of actuation, and a means of drive.

Mechanical face seals are of several types. Some of them are as follows: Pusher, Unbalanced, conventional, non-pusher, balanced, cartridge and so on. So this was some information about mechanical seal.
