Shoe making used to be a traditional handicraft. With the advent of new innovative machinery, shoe making has become much easier and quicker with less labour.
Shoemaking companies have four departments. They are-
Clicking or cutting department-
The top part of the shoe or upper is made in this department. The raw material is cut into various shapes that take the form of the uppers by using metal strip knives or dies.
Closing or machining department-
Highly skilled workers sew the components together so as to produce the completed upper. In early stages, when the upper becomes three dimensional and is no longer flat, the post machine is used. To enable the operative sew the three dimensional upper, the sewing surface of the machine is elevated on a post. The eyelets are also inserted at this stage only so that the laces are accommodated.
Lasting and making department-
Last is nothing but a plastic shape simulating the foot shape. With the help of a last the completed uppers are moulded into a shape of the foot. It is removed from the shoe and can be reused for making other shoes later. An insole is a temporary attachment and is attached to the bottom of the last. The upper is stretched and is moulded over the last and attached to the insole rib to obtain a lasted shoe. The welt (a strip of leather or plastic) is sewn onto the shoe. Then the sole is attached to the welt and are stitched together. In case of heeled shoes, heel is attached. If a flat shoe is being made, then insoles are flat. This completes the making of the shoe.
Finishing department- Depending on the raw material being used for making the shoe, the finishing varies. They are stained, polished and waxed to give them an attractive finish and ensure a waterproof edge.
Many machines are available in different ranges. Apart of easy manufacture, they make shoes in bulk without any compromise on quality and style.
