Every one of us might have used the thermometer at some point of time. It is one of the very common temperature measuring instruments those are being used by people across the world.This equipment is meant to gauge the temperature of body, to determine whether the person has fever or not. Apart from that there are tools like pyrometers, Thermistors, thermocouples to gauge the temperature of various materials in different states, so that manufacturing products can be done within the perfect limits set by the manufacturing device.
Thermometers are also used for industrial purposes and can be of various types;
Let’s get to know some new varieties of thermometers that we are unaware of;
a. Bimetal thermometers either contain helical or spiral bimetal strips. Both the metal strips are joined together and have different thermal expansion co-efficient.
b. An expansion thermometer measures the temperature by using a liquid-filled measuring system containing a temperature probe, a bourdon tube and a capillary. They work in a sealed arrangement.
c. Gas actuated thermometer with or without capillary contains a capillary, a stem and a case that contains the bourdon tube elements.The complete measuring system is being filled by an inert gas under pressure, change in temperature moves the internal pressure, indicating the change over the pointer.
Thermocouples, thermistors and resistance sensors are few of the most effective temperature measuring equipment. A thermocouple measures temperature using the thermoelectric effect. The thermistors work on the temperature dependent change of resistance in the sensor element. The thermistors have a negative temperature co-efficient.
Resistance sensors make use of the temperature sensitive resistance change in the platinum ‘resistance’, which is supplied with a constant current and the voltage drop.
