Industrial Abrasives

Abrasives are those materials that are used for the purpose of smoothing other hard materials. However, it is not only used for smoothing but also involved in roughening surfaces layer as in beaded, matte and satin finish. They came in different grit sizes and particle depending on how much material has to be removed. They are generally characterised by high hardness to moderate to high fracture toughness. Abrasives can be naturally available or these can be synthetically made.

1    Natural Abrasives are those hard materials that are found in earth and are used to shape other materials by grinding or abrading. They occur in natural deposits and can be processed for use with minor changes.

2   Synthetic abrasives are the products of significantprocess that include various raw materials and chemicals

Materials Used for Abrasives

Ø  Diamond that is utilized in final polishing owing to high hardness and price
Ø  Use of glass for operations related to pressure blasting
Ø  Silicon carbide that is  normally utilized for non-ferrous metals
Ø  Alumina that is used for alloys of iron, wood and high tensile matter
Ø  Cubic boron nitride (CBN)
Ø  Alloys of Zirconia or Alumina
Ø  Garnet
Abrasives manufacturers in India have various types of abrasives to offer that include:
·         Bonded Abrasives:  These abrasives are fired to high temperatures for the purpose of inducing bonding by those materials that make a kind of glassy matrix. Few of the common shapes are blocks, cylinders, wheels and cones.
·         Coated abrasives consist of abrasive grits that are bonded to very flexible types of substrates like cloth, film, paper and cloth
·         Burs are normally small sized and are used for the purpose of precision operations as well as fine machine tasks.
·         Metal Bounded Abrasives: more specifically diamonds are kept in a metal matrix. These are needed for removing various abrided materials build –up.
